Why have a will?

The purpose of a will is to ensure that your estate which includes everything that you own is passed to your chosen loved ones. If you do not make a will or your will is invalid, you shall die intestate which means that the government shall determine how your estate is distributed and to whom. A badly drafted will may not have an immediate effect on you however, the financial and unsettling effect on your loved ones can be immense. Not only can this result in financial loss to your estate but it could leave your loved ones without.

Powers of attorney

A lasting power of attorney (LPA) is a legal document that lets you (the ‘donor’) appoint one or more people (known as ‘attorneys’) to help you make decisions or to make decisions on your behalf. This gives you more control over what happens to you if you have an accident or an illness and can’t make your own decisions (you ‘lack mental capacity’). We consider such documents to be just as important as having a will in place because they protect you while you are alive!

Commercial services

We discuss with you the effect which the death of a key person may have on your business. A key person in terms of business continuity could be a director or even a major shareholder. Would your business continue to operate? What happens to the shares in the company if a shareholder dies? Do you have a shareholders' agreement in place?
